New moon program adminstrator

Departing during an extremely partisan time in politics, Bridenstine implored the next administrator to keep those politics out of space exploration. Changing administrations is something NASA, as well as every federal agency, must handle, but space programs often span decades and multiple administrations. I will miss the amazing NASA family and will forever be grateful for my time at this incredible agency. Ad astra. The Artemis moon program has received bipartisan support although not always the full funding that NASA sought.

And we look forward to getting them ready. Artemis is all about putting women on the Moon. Will she be the one to make the first step on the Moon? The direction that we have right now is that the next man and the first woman will be Americans, and that we will land on the south pole of the Moon in What are the biggest challenges for you guys and how do you plan to overcome those hurdles? You have identified the biggest risk, which is political.

We go back to , it was the last time we had a person on the surface of the Moon. And there have been many efforts since to return to the Moon, and they have all failed. And they have not failed because of NASA; they have not failed because of the technological capabilities of this agency. They have failed because of the whimsical budgets that come from politicians.

As the program goes longer and longer, what happens is priorities change, budgets change, administrations change, and each one of these things result in additional political risk.

If we want to have success we have to retire the political risk, which means we need to accelerate the plan to get to the Moon, and we need strong bipartisan consensus that this is the right thing to do for our country.

We will build an Artemis Base Camp on the surface and the Gateway in lunar orbit. These elements will allow our robots and astronauts to explore more and conduct more science than ever before.

The only rocket that can send Orion, astronauts, and cargo to the Moon on a single mission. Upon launch, the SLS will be the most powerful rocket in the world. The spaceship in lunar orbit where astronauts will transfer between Orion and the lander on regular Artemis missions. Gateway will remain in orbit for more than a decade, providing a place to live and work, and supporting long-term science and human exploration on and around the Moon.

Built by American companies, human landing systems are the final mode of transportation that will take astronauts from lunar orbit to the surface and back to orbit. Join our Space Forums to keep talking space on the latest missions, night sky and more!
