Capcom's third-person action-adventure Shadow of Rome sees you take on the gladiator arena against enemies of monstrous strength and agility. The game is set not long after Julius Caesar's assassination.

Agrippa, the main protagonist, is persuaded to join as a gladiator in order to save his father from being executed for Caesar's murder. A vast conspiracy lies at the heart of Shadow of Rome, and with the help of the future Emperor Augustus, Agrippa moves in a race against time to solve Caesar's murder and free his father.

The third instalment in the Total War series, Rome: Total War is another grand strategy game set in the final years of the Roman Republic and incorporates real-time battle mechanics.

Sega recently launched a remastered version of the game , with the principal aim still being to become Emperor of the Roman Empire. Aside from starting from a Roman family, there are several interesting factions across the globe to begin your journey from.

The game's expansion packs - Barbarian Invasion and Alexander - are stellar standouts themselves, with the once-in-a-lifetime chance of playing as the Alexander the Great himself. Yet another gladiator game, Colosseum: Road To Freedom has you playing as a slave forced to train day in and day out to win a tournament in order to obtain freedom.

Colosseum allows for customisation of your chosen protagonist, as well as multiple endings depending on your decisions. There are opportunities for you to participate in training sessions to upgrade and learn new skills before an official fight. Just like the original, Rygar features a story that is steeped in Greek and Roman mythology. The titular Rygar is armed with the Diskarmor and functions similarly to the whip from the Castlevania and the Blades of Chaos from God of War.

Centurion: Defender of Rome takes place in the year BC and players are tasked with rising through the ranks of the Roman army to become Caesar. Despite the limited hardware, Defender of Rome remained one of the most faithful and historically accurate depictions of Ancient Rome on consoles for many years to come.

Released in for the PC Praetorians is a real-time strategy and tactics game originally developed by Pyro Studios the creators of the Commandos series. Praetorians allow its players to take on the role of Julius Caesar and do battle with barbarian hordes.

The game is set during the fall of the Roman Empire and sets up an almost post-apocalyptic scenario for players to dive into. Players get to create their character as they participate in Roman politics and backstabbing.

Age of Decadence has a strategic turn-based combat system and deep dialogue and choice system that has huge implications in how the world develops around them. Released in for the PC, Rome: Total War may be starting to show its age compared to its successors but that takes nothing away from the sheer amount of depth and gameplay it offers.

Even after the release of its sequel Total War: Rome many fans of the genre consider the original to be the best. The game is still being modded by fans to this day but even without that, the lengthy single-player campaign is one of the best historically-set videogames of all time. The game also comes with the expansions Barbarian Invasion and Alexander which added more complexities to negotiations, religions, timelines, and locations.

An Iron Age tribe of southern Britain, the Iceni are a proud and fierce people. Desperate to reclaim its past glory, Macedon finds itself locked into its pre-Alexandrian borders on all sides. Can they rise again? The eastern empire of Parthia was one of the few who came close to matching the power and wealth of Rome. The Suebi are an indomitable Germanic culture dwelling to the north east of Gaul. A mountainous region bordering the Black Sea, Pontus contains many fertile river valleys and ports upon which its largely agricultural and trade economy is based.
