An innovative Doctor of Medicine curriculum was recently introduced to bring more flexibility and individualization to the education process, to create lifelong learners and bring better health care to all.

The curriculum integrates basic science content more closely with clinical context, provides clinical exposure earlier and reinforces basic science content in clinical rotations. With either option, students will learn how to conduct research to improve and develop innovative educational programs in health professions education.

This combined training program leading to both Doctor of Medicine and Doctorate of Philosophy degrees provides research training for highly motivated medical students planning careers in academic medicine. Such training produces medical scientists with a valuable, and well-balanced, ability to relate their study of clinical medicine with basic biomedical science and provide unique insights into human disease processes.

The MD Plus Program is committed to providing students the skills needed to take leadership roles in the healthcare industries, and combining a business degree through Mays Business School with a medical degree allows graduates to excel in areas of health care entrepreneurship and manage health care teams and organizations.

The increasing complexities of health care delivery put a premium on professionals who understand and meet the demands required to deliver innovative, collaborative, and compassionate care. This MD Plus Program, an integrated five-year course of study, is a pathway for students who are interested in enhancing options in their medical careers by also earning a Master of Science in Medical Science MS. The new Engineering Medicine EnMed program allows students to obtain an engineering degree along with their medical degree in an integrated five-year course of study.

Graduates will be well poised to develop new therapy paradigms and pharmaceuticals and solve a variety of health care problems. For students who wish to expand their knowledge of teaching and curriculum development, the certificate program prepares students to teach in a variety of settings with an interdisciplinary team. Coursework may be applied to the master's degree if the student wishes to pursue the advanced degree in the future.

The Master of Science in nursing education prepares the graduate to take on the role of educator in various patient care settings and in institutions of higher education through completion of a hour curriculum. The course instruction is delivered primarily online allowing students to balance career, family and other responsibilities while advancing their education. The Master Science in nursing—Family Nurse Practitioner track prepares the graduate to practice as a primary care provider to a wide range of clients while focusing on health promotion, risk reduction, disease prevention and illness management.

The Master of Science in Nursing—Forensic Nursing track prepares the graduate to care for victims and perpetrators of traumatic events or criminal acts that result in trauma or death. While caring for their patients, the forensic nurse is also responsible for observing, recognizing, collecting and documenting forensic evidence related to the traumatic event or criminal act for subsequent use in civil or criminal legal proceedings.
